Hugo

The Geckos went to our lovely local arts theatre to see the magical “Hugo” – a children’s film (?) filled with beautiful cinematography, wonderful sets, gorgeous vintage costume, fabulous acting and an intriguing plot. Although we only saw it in 2D – like Mark Kermode we don’t think 3D is necessary or would’ve added anything.

It’s a simple story about a boy who is an orphan, trying to unlock the secret of a mechanical toy which his father was trying to mend with him when he died in a tragic accident. There are some lovely characters (like the Station Inspector played by Sacha Baron Cohen who owes much to ‘Allo ‘Allo and Frances de la Tour’s Madame Emilie who is nurturing a romance with a man who are dachshund doesn’t like) who draw you into this tale of a young boy and an old man finding their place in the world.

We thoroughly enjoyed the film, have recommended to friends since and are looking forward to the DVD coming out – so that we can watch it at home with a glass of wine! So, we are delighted that it has been nominated for 11 Oscars, including Best Picture.

And, as with all the best children’s stories the film ends happily ever after… !

Downton Abbey Autographs

Having undertaken the frightfully British pastime of queuing for what seemed an eternity (45minutes) Gecko was able to meet some of the cast of Downton Abbey, who very kindly signed their autographs and smiled for pictures too.

There was plenty to look at as we waited…

Of course we gave a donation to the various charities – we have been told that the unconfirmed total is £100,000 – how fantastic is that!

As we walked to the car park, we were able to watch ‘The Blades’ give a fantastic aeronautic display… it was breath-taking!

It was wonderful to see two of the greatest ladies of the sky flying over Highclere at the weekend… we need to ensure that these wonderful aeroplanes are kept flying!

As the unmistakable sound of the Spitfire’s engines could be heard everyone looked to the skies to see the fabulous display. The warmth from the crowd was like a group greeting old friend!
And then later in the day we were treated to the fabulous Vulcan.

A Day At Downton Abbey

October 18, 2011 - 11:11 am No Comments

Sunday, 16th October – what a beautiful day… to spend at Highclere Castle (or Downton Abbey as we at Gecko call it) for their Heroes At Highclere event – raising funds for armed forces charities.

Help for Heroes

Help for Heroes

The Heroes event was a great way to raise funds for some fabulous charities, including: Help For Heroes, Royal British Legion, ABF, Horses For Heroes and the Florence Nightingale Foundation. There was masses to see and do, including watching the Kings Troop & Royal Artillery, the Royal Army Physical Training Corps and Heroes Help Horses

We also saw the fantastic War Horse, which is amazingly realistic – people watching obviously felt genuine emotion for the horse!

Hobbs Oxford

Yesterday Gecko went to Oxford – not to admire the Dreaming Spires of Oxford, but for the exclusive launch of the, vintage inspired, 30th anniversary collection at the Hobbs store, as a guests of Hobbs’ lovely marketing ladies.

Freixenet Sponsored the fizz

Freixenet Sponsored the fizz

Freixenet sponsored Hobbs events in 72 of its stores nationwide – which is part of an ongoing partnership that has worked well for each brand. We had a lovely time, the team there are great and the collection for autumn/ winter 2011 to mark the 30th Birthday is fabulous! Lots of vintage inspired pieces from Jackie O neat suits and cute 60s styled a-line dresses to funky leopard print platforms and sexy Emma Peel boots… and some great prints.

We wandered around the store with the other guests (30 at most per store) tried on some clothes and loved all the shoes – there was a raffle to win a pair of shoes at 1981 prices which was very exciting!! And, we were of course treated to a glass or two of Freixenet bubbly – which the other shoppers enjoyed as well! And we left with a goodie bag too.

Shoes, shopping and fizz!

A lovely way to spend a Tuesday evening – with thanks to the team at Hobbs!
